There are many different causes of anxiety.
The anxiety epidemic has become widespread in societies around the globe. Although prevalent for many years, only in recent years has there been a push to openly discuss anxiety (and mental health in general) and take steps in healing the emotional, mental and physical wounds it causes. People are starting to view anxiety in a different light; no longer the systemic “tough it out” mentality that previous generations held. There are new advances in therapies, treatments, medications, techniques, and other areas of research that have thrust much-needed relief to those who are struggling.
But over my years of experiencing, researching, and subsequently managing and reducing my anxiety, I have found that treating anxiety can be tricky if you don’t understand the primary causes.
Why is understanding the root causes of anxiety important?
Well, for starters, each cause has (potentially) different solutions.
There are some solutions that crossover to many, if not, all causes of anxiety.
But it’s wise to have a basic understanding of where your anxiety is originating to efficiently combat the issue.
PRIMARY ROOT CAUSES
GENETICS
One key factor for specific anxiety disorders is Genetics. Genetics has been directly linked to social anxiety disorder. Researchers at the Institute of Human Genetics at the University of Bonn in Germany have found in this study that a serotonin transporter gene called “SLC6A4” is strongly associated with someone’s odds of suffering from social anxiety disorder. Another study found that people who have family members with an anxiety disorder are more likely to have one themselves.
ENVIRONMENT AND STRESSORS
The environment around you can influence your levels of anxiety. Environmental factors such as personal relationships, a job, school, and financial woes can be significant factors in contributing to anxiety. Another critical stressor is going through the death of a loved one, which causes emotional trauma that can lead to anxiety. I can tell you from firsthand experience that your environment can play a significant role in activating and elevating anxiety. At periods of my life, such as going through my parent’s divorce as a child, dealing with breakups or loss of love, and working jobs with toxic people, my levels of anxiety rose significantly.
MEDICAL FACTORS
There are times when anxiety is a sign of an underlying health issue. In some instances, signs and symptoms of anxiety are indicators of a medical illness. It’s always best to speak to a doctor about any undiagnosed symptoms of anxiety to find out if they are attached to an underlying medical concern. Some of the medical problems linked to anxiety are heart disease, thyroid issues, diabetes, respiratory disorders, chronic pain; irritable bowel syndrome, and rare tumors.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Substance abuse in the United States has been a problem for many years. A history of substance abuse is one of the factors linked to causing anxiety. There are people struggling from all walks of life with substance abuse and its many negative symptoms. But out of all the symptoms and conditions surrounding substance abuse, anxiety is, at times, overlooked. If you are struggling, speak to a professional about ways to help yourself manage and overcome any substance abuse or addiction problems you may have.
ANXIETY, PANIC, AND PHOBIA DISORDERS
Anxiety, panic, and phobia-related disorders are another major cause of anxiety. For people who struggle with anxiety disorders, the anxiety doesn’t go away and can get worse over time. General Anxiety Disorder is the most common amongst adults. This disorder can leave people feeling fatigued, chronically worried, restless, and on edge. Panic Disorder can lead to panic attacks, which come on suddenly and cause trembling, shaking, heart palpitations, sweating, and the feeling of impending doom and being out of control. Phobia-Related Disorders cause an intense fear of specific objects or situations, usually out of proportion with the actual danger caused by the object or situation. They cause irrational fears and severe anxiety when faced with actual objects or anxiety.
