The benefits of hiring a life coach can be profound.
Coaching is about empowering others and allowing them to create their path forward. It can be both scary and liberating to take control over aspects of your own life that you might’ve felt lost in previously.
One of the reasons I chose to get my life coaching certificate is because I wanted to help others discover that empowered feeling.
Coaching can provide a client with a range of training and guidance in areas they may be struggling or searching for more fulfillment. Many people look to coaches to help guide them to a specific goal they want to achieve but have been struggling with attaining.
There is a wide range of topics a life coach can cover, and most coaches specialize in helping specific niches and particular clientele.
Life coaching can be done over the phone, virtually over a computer, or in person, depending on the coach’s and client’s preferences.
WHAT IS LIFE COACHING?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines life coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”’
It’s important to remember that life coaching is NOT psychotherapy or consulting.
WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF COACHING?
1. GIVES YOU A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Often when we are stuck in a rut, we tend to view from the same vantage point over and over again until we become emotionally and mentally exhausted. Coaching can help guide you to a fresh, new perspective on your current situation. By doing this, you gain a new outlook that can help propel you forward in creating new change in your life.
2. CULTIVATES POSITIVE EMOTIONS
Coaching can create the space for positive emotions to flourish. Because most people who are stuck or struggling in a particular area of their lives are typically feeling negative emotions, coaching can help to flip that switch so that clients can begin cultivating more positive emotions such as gratitude, love, joy, amusement, excitement, and many others which help in creating the new perspective I talk about above.
3. ALLOWS YOU THE SPACE TO REFLECT
One of the major advantages of speaking to an unbiased third party such as a life coach is that it gives you the space you need to reflect. How? By letting you get out whatever it is that has been on your mind and having a coach there to help guide you through the thoughts and emotions behind it all. There’s a sense of peace from letting it all out to someone outside of the situation. It gives you space to see, to take a deep breath, and to change course when necessary.
4. HELPS YOU DEVELOP HEALTHIER HABITS
Another one of the benefits of hiring a life coach is that it can help with habits. Coaching can illuminate your bad habits and help you change them into healthier ones. Habits are essential in every aspect of our lives, so improving them can make a drastic difference. By asking powerful and open-ended questions, coaching can allow you to deconstruct your behaviors and routines while talking out healthier ways of living.
5. PUTS AN EMPHASIS ON APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY
An area that life coaching often focuses on is called appreciative inquiry. Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is “an approach to organizational change which focuses on strengths rather than on weaknesses – quite different to many approaches to evaluation which focus on deficits and problems.” Appreciative inquiry can help a client to focus on the good in a situation rather than the bad. It can also help in finding solutions to problems by highlighting areas of strength.
6. ASSISTS IN IDENTIFYING GOALS
Another key component to improving via coaching is identifying short and long-term goals. Coaches can ask questions to get you thinking about what you need to do in the present as well as the future to get where you want to go. Identifying goals is crucial in maintaining a singular focus. Breaking those goals down into both short and long-term will give you a much clearer picture of what you need to do to achieve your results.
7. TEACHES YOU HOW TO SELF-COACH
Self-coaching is a critical aspect of life coaching since it teaches us how to coach ourselves when our coach isn’t around. Self-coaching is hearing and listening to one’s inner voice. Learning how to self-coach can pay major dividends in both personal development and trying to achieve your goals. This is one of the greatest benefits of hiring a life coach.
